Red Ribbon Week

Sinaloa Middle School held their Red Ribbon Week and our Builders Club sponsored a lunch time event that went very well.  The kids sponsored an anti-smoking booth.  There was a lot of interest from the students and a lot of hard working Builders club kids pulling the whole event together.

La Mesa Junior High Builders Club
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Drive

It took a lot of time and work, but we did it, thanks to Trisha Ortega and Doris Do from Peak.

Peak is an educational program that empowers students to manage their futures through real-world applications.

Our journey started when Builders Club was at an event called River Rally last September.

We talked to these nice ladies and asked if we could get some free light bulbs.

They ended up teaching six teachers at La Mesa about ways to save energy and donated hundreds of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

We also sold more than 800 "Be Green" bracelets to buy CFLs and received donations from the community to help us hand out light bulbs to save energy in our community.

By using CFL light bulbs instead of regular bulbs, students at La Mesa alone can save enough energy to light more that three million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gasses equaling emissions of almost 800,000 cars.

We took each light bulb and packaged them individually and put energy-saving tips in the bags.

Builders Club is trying to make La Mesa Junior High an Earth-conscientious and energy-efficient school.

Events that Builders Club members have done are a 5k run, Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast, River Rally, recycling and picking up trash at school, holiday food drive, Earth Day recycling project, plus more.

Builders Club was so excited to find out we reached our goal. It felt awesome. Every day we feel like we accomplished something huge.

Nicole Acquaviva is a seventh-grader at La Mesa Junior High School.

Sinaloa Middle School Builders Club
The Sinaloa Builders Club is up and running for the 2007-08 school year. Their faculty advisor, Corrine Mansfield informed me that they have dues paid from 54 members. They will be providing club T-shirts to all of the members to show off their colors.

Several of their members helped us this summer by working at the Lobster Fest and at the Simi Valley Days Carnival. They also walked and rode on our float in the Simi Valley Days Parade.

Since school started they have had a table at the school's Club Sign-Up Day, have collected funds for the UNICEF support of efforts to fight AIDS in Swaziland, have supported the Trick-Or-Treat day at the Sunrise Extended Care Home and are planning to work on the Rose Parade floats at the Rosemont Pavilion. We expect many of them will be attending the Kiwanis/Sponsored Youth Picnic on Saturday November 18th.

hey meet every Monday at 12:18 in Corrine's Science Room, D-11, for lunch and an all too short business meeting. Any of the Kiwanis Club members who would like to see this group in action are encouraged to show up at one of their Monday meetings. Just check in at the school office and then go to Room D-11 at the change of class bell at 12:18. You will be warmly welcomed.
