An Article from the
National Association Secondary School Principals
When Teach for America corps members join the highly selective program, they often have no idea how challenging the struggle of teaching in a low-income, urban school actually is. Two recruits candidly share their stories as first-year teachers at a Los Angeles high school and reveal the day-to-day challenges of working in a system that is overburdened and under-funded. "The system is failing, and it's making me fail," said one of the recruits.

Their stories are excerpted from Relentless Pursuit: A Year in the Trenches with Teach For America by Donna Foote. U.S. News & World Report, 4/11/08

BUILDERS CLUB NEW FEE STRUCTURE

BUILDERS CLUB NEW FEE STRUCTURE

I just want to take a moment and update everyone on some of the "logistics' regarding the new club fee structure to help you better understand the implementation plan.
The Kiwanis International (KI) Board of Directors voted that the fees for Builders Club (BC) will change from a per member charge to a per club fee of $150US starting October 2008.

In the past, members received personalized membership cards annually and BC pins their first year for the $3.50. In addition, the advisors were required to enter names of all club members, delete non-active members, and note new members. Historically, there have been several breakdowns in this process leading to clubs not receiving pins until much later in the year, advisors not understanding the registration process, etc. Of course, there are issues on the Kiwanis International end as well. The previous process required clubs to first complete the on-line registration to develop a bill that then would be paid. Once paid KI had to process the new members, etc. and send out specific amounts of supplies to each of the club. In summary, this above process was not effective for either the advisor or KI.

Although the new "process" is still be developed,
it is KI proposal that the following will occur:

The sponsoring Kiwanis Club will be billed the $150 per club. The Kiwanis Club will also be responsible for completing a simple form requesting the Kiwanis Advisor contact information, Faculty Advisor contact information, and club member numbers. This would be submitted with the $150 payment. (If the Kiwanis Club chooses not to pay the fee, they will work directly with the BC to ensure the fees are covered. It would, however, be the sponsoring clubs responsibility for the fees to be paid.)

Once the bill is paid, the club will receive the following items. (Please remember this is only a preliminary list developed at the SLP conference in January 2008.)
  • Officer Pins
  • Resource CD for advisor (including a template to print additional membership cards and certificates)
  • Annual Dated Banner Patch
  • KI Sponsorship Resource Guide
  • Merchandise Catalog
  • 50 - Builders Block Magazines
  • 2 - Builders Club Posters
  • 50 - Blank, undated membership cardso
  • 50 - Membership Certificates
  • 50 - Membership Brochures
  • 50 - Parent Information Brochures
If addition items are needed, they will be available at a minimal fee.

The issue of pins versus buttons is still present. KI is planning to develop an on-line survey for advisors to use with their students to vote on what their members would prefer: pins when a member joins a club or an annual button. It was suggested at the conference that the members create a new button annually. If buttons were selected, they would be designed in-house for 2008-2009 and then, created anew for the following year.

KI realize this is a completely different approach to the Builders Club, but this "new way" would reduce some "processes" in-house and decrease the turn around time because the materials would not be so individualized. It is intended that the burden of the fees would be removed from the club but rather be placed with the sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Ideally, this would increase the involvement of the sponsoring club.

As mentioned, this issue has already passed for October 2008. KI will be working very diligently to meet the wants and needs of the members. I am very open to your suggestions for implementation.

Watch for the 2007-08 Club's Invoice and Registration Mailing
FACULTY ADVISORS

One of the best ways to guarantee the year to start off on a positive note is to submit the appropriate paperwork and make sure to get your membership fees
to Kiwanis International to insure the Builders Club remains in good standing.

In late August a special mailing will be forward the Builders Club Faculty Advisor with the PASSWORD INFORMATION. The Faculty Advisor should use this password to go online and update the club's membership roster. The Advisor can then pay membership fees for each member on-line with the use of a credit card, or an invoice can be printed and submitted to your sponsoring Kiwanis Club so they will be able to write a check and along with the invoice submit it to Kiwanis International. Whatever method you choose to pay the membership fees this year, I would like a copy of the INVOICE AND CHECK for my records.

It is important that the club's membership roster be updated on-line. When the information is entered and submitted Kiwanis international receives the updates electronically. New members entered into the system will receive a membership pin, card and a Builders Club Handbook.

Membership fees are $3.50 per member (one time fee) and will provide the following resources: three issues of the Builders Bloc Magazine, contest and recognition award materials, Web site support, and access to Kiwanis International Service Leadership staff.

The MEMBERSHIP FEES ARE DUE BY DECEMBER 1ST, 2007.

Clubs that have not paid their fees will be PLACED ON SUSPENSION.
